Games can accomplish each role to varying degrees, and can use infinitely different methods to do so.
Over the past two decades the most successful and influential games have been skillful implementations of new or novel concepts. These concepts can be in the form of game-play, marketing, player engagement, community engagement, monetization, and much more.
The games industry is a new and dynamic frontier. One where success is not guaranteed by investment or prior industry influence, but instead earned through a game just being fun to play.
